Review: Every resident of Petersburg should read “The Devil’s Thumb” article that Jon writes to describe his 1977 trek to and summit of Devil’s Thumb. Not only does our town play into the article somewhat, but very keen insights into the drive or the vision of climbers. As an armchair alpinist, I found the articles about Arizona canyoneering an intriguing diversion from the stock stories of frostbite, hypoxia, cerebral edema, and the like. And finally, “Denali Club” is the article that keeps me an armchair alpinist! – vivid descriptions of multiple night snow cave nights, filth, tedium, and crowds. But again, a “must-read” for Alaskan residents to get a glimpse of the allure of Denali and the business and risk of getting climbers to and from the tallest mountain in North America. ml
